FIFA World Cup Soccer Opening Ceremony - Dung Beetle

For the opening ceremony of the 2010 FIFA World cup soccer, Roger was commissioned by VWV to create a large dung beetle puppet.

On the 11th of June 2010 the FIFA World Cup Soccer kicked off in Johannesburg, South Africa.

As part of the opening ceremony Roger was commissioned to create a large dung beetle.

The beetle was operated by 8 dancers and performed to the famous Xhosa Click Song by Miriam Makeba. This creature was about 4 Meters long but only weighed about 30 KG.

Roger initially used local kids from the Seven Passes Initiative to help him with the development of the movement. He ended up taking two of these youngsters as well as Dance instructor Celeste Milsom with him to Johannesburg where he hired 6 Professional dancers. Celeste and Roger rehearsed with them for two weeks before the show.
